Somatic Movement Education
Reconnect with your body. Move with greater ease.
Our bodies tell the story of our lives.
Stress, injury, repetitive movement, emotions, and the pace of modern life can all leave us holding unnecessary muscular tension. Over time, these unconscious patterns can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, restricted movement, and a feeling of being disconnected from our bodies.
Somatic Movement Education, in the tradition of Thomas Hanna, is a gentle movement practice that helps you rediscover your body's natural ability to move with ease.
Rather than stretching or strengthening muscles, somatic movement works by retraining the communication between your brain and muscles. Through slow, mindful movements and focused attention, you'll learn to sense where you habitually hold tension and gently release it, improving movement, posture, and body awareness.
This is an educational process. Instead of someone "fixing" your body, you'll develop the skills to better understand your own movement patterns and learn techniques you can continue using long after your session.
What can Somatic Movement Education help with?
Many people seek somatic movement to support:
-
Persistent muscle tension
-
Neck, shoulder and back discomfort
-
General stiffness and reduced mobility
-
Stress and nervous system regulation
-
Improved posture and movement efficiency
-
Greater body awareness and connection
What to expect in a one-hour session
Each session is tailored to your individual needs.
We'll begin with a conversation about your health history, movement patterns, and what you'd like support with. I'll then observe how your body naturally moves and where you may be holding habitual tension.
From there, I'll guide you through a series of slow, gentle somatic movements designed to help your nervous system release unnecessary muscular contraction. Throughout the session, I'll encourage you to notice sensations, move with curiosity rather than effort, and develop a deeper awareness of your body.
You'll leave with practical movements and greater understanding that you can continue practising at home, empowering you to take an active role in your own wellbeing.
How does it work?
One of the key principles of Somatic Movement Education is that many of the aches, pains, and movement limitations we experience aren't always caused by muscles being too weak or too tight. Often, they're the result of the brain forgetting how to fully relax certain muscles after years of stress, injury, repetitive movement, or habitual postures.
Thomas Hanna referred to this as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA), a condition where the communication between the brain and muscles becomes less efficient, leaving muscles in a constant state of unconscious contraction.
Through slow, mindful movements, we begin to reawaken this communication.
A key technique used in Hanna Somatics is called pandiculation. You may have noticed your dog or cat naturally stretching and yawning after waking from a nap, that instinctive movement is a form of pandiculation. Rather than stretching a muscle, pandiculation gently contracts and then slowly releases it with your full attention. This process helps the brain update its awareness of the muscle and relearn how to relax it more completely.
By repeating these mindful movement patterns, we're essentially retraining the sensory-motor system - the network of the brain and nervous system responsible for sensing and controlling movement. As these pathways become clearer and more efficient, unnecessary muscular tension can begin to dissolve, movement becomes easier, and your body regains a greater sense of freedom and control.
Rather than treating symptoms alone, Somatic Movement Education teaches your brain and body to work together more effectively, creating lasting changes through awareness and practice.
Listening to the language of the body
At the heart of this work is a simple belief: when we learn to listen to the language of the body, it often tells us exactly what it needs.
Somatic Movement Education does not force change, it develops awareness through moving with curiosity, and rebuilding communication between your brain and body. As your awareness grows, so does your ability to recognise patterns of tension, move with greater ease, and respond to your body's needs with more understanding and compassion.
A gentle reminder
Somatic Movement Education is not a massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, or medical therapy. It is a movement education practice that supports greater awareness, improved movement, and nervous system regulation through gentle, mindful movement. If you are experiencing significant pain or have concerns about your health, I recommend seeking appropriate medical advice alongside this work.
